NSD: Storage Solution that Sparkles

 NSD: Storage Solution that Sparkles

I have exciting news! My craft room is featured in our June “Creative Spaces” column. It’s been a loooong work in progress, so making it to this point is a definite milestone for me. I can’t wait to share it with you soon. (You’ll have to let me know what you think when you see the column.) In the meantime, I’ve prepared a small (and super easy) organization project from my space in honor of today’s festivities.

STORAGE LABELS

As I imagine most creative peeps are, I’m a very visual person. I like things to sparkle…even the boring stuff like storage labels. Thus, I made these glittery guys, which hang from my punch storage system (a hanging shoe rack from IKEA). Here’s how to create your own dazzling identifiers:

Step 1:

Punch squares from cardstock. Since I used the pretty pink tag rims from Making Memories, I used their square punch to get my cardstock squares.

Step 2:

Frame punched pieces with metal rim tags.

Step 3:

I used the Making Memories Tag Maker to seal my metal edge tags around my cardstock squares.

Step 4:

Print labels. I used a label maker, but you can also write or type your labels on cardstock and adhere them to your cardstock squares.

My punches are organized by shape/style, so I made labels for each category (circles, squares, borders, images and scallops).

Step 5:

Pierce your tags on either side of the label and insert brads. My pink glitter brads are from Doodlebug Design.

Step 6:

Punch a notch in the top of your tag. The notch tool I used is from Making Memories.

Step 7:

Thread and tie coordinating ribbon through the slot.

Step 8:

Adhere the tag to the appropriate punch drawer with a safety pin.

These come together SO quickly. In a few simple steps you can have your own organizers that are so much prettier than basic white office supply tags. Let the colors of your creative space direct the colors of your tags for a finished look that really shines.

NSD GIVEAWAY #3

How would you like your own set of custom tags? They don’t have to be for punches, either. They can be for anything you think needs a tag (ribbon jars, sticker drawers, stamp bins, you name it). Well, I’m willing to make two lucky people their own set of six custom tags. If I randomly select your name, I’ll work with you to get you the storage words and color scheme that works for your space*. Interested? Need more convincing? How about I throw in a Making Memories Desktop Organizer (in kraft) to sweeten the deal?

HOW TO ENTER

Leave a comment on this post, stating your favorite organization tip. This contest is for today and today only, so don’t delay. BTW, I know our blog timer is all messed up. Don’t worry, I’ll factor that in when pulling qualifying comments in to the drawing.

That’s all for now, folks. See ya again in a couple of hours. Until then, I look forward to reading your ideas!

Megan Hoeppner, Creative Editor

* Note: There are limited options when it comes to the color of your tag rims, but I can do them in silver to complement any space. Thanks.

  1. My new scrap room is still in a general state of chaos, but I put a big piece of peg board on part of the wall where it would have otherwise been dead space. I want things out where I can see them.

Speaking of…I was planning to organize today and intead having been surfing the net all day for NSD fun!

  2. Jodee says:

Those tags are great! I have a basket on my table where I put all my adhesive and scissors and craft knife. All of it is right there when I need it instead of digging it out or trying to find things. Works great for me.

  3. ShellyJ says:

very cute! … can’t wait to get my June issue :) my favorite organize tip… clean off your table after each page/project! If i dont do this, then I just get lost in what I am doing. Even if I know I will be using the same papers, I still clean it up by simply putting it in a neat pile in the corner of my table to start fresh.

  4. Sara P says:

The tags are too cute! Great way to get everything labeled. My biggest organization help would have to be my drawer units from Target that store my adhesives, punches, tools, punches, inks, and other supplied I want to have handy, but not on my scrap table.

  5. Nicky from Canada says:

Love it – my best organization tip is to have all my books and creative projects, ideas in either journalling books or binders. If I keep these up (sometimes hard than other times) it makes a huge difference when I cam working on a project.
    You guys rock

  6. Cheri says:

Cute tags! I like to have a wall board where I can make notes to myself or put things that are currently in progress.

  7. Lainee says:

Love the tags! I am not the most organized person, but I do love the cropper hopper vertical storage for my 12×12 paper. It makes it really easy to find what I am looking for.

  8. Jennifer B. says:

I have been in an organizing frenzy here lately. My favorite storage solution is a cute black scrolled spice rack that came with little glass spice jars. I’ve filled the jars with all my various embellies such as buttons, brads, chipboard, etc.

  9. Michelle says:

    Tags are adorable!

My organization tip: When setting up your room, make a few pages and see where you naturally lay your tools and supplies, then make that their permanent home with your storage unit of choice. Live out of the boxes for a while and find where things naturally end up, you are more likely to keep them in their place if they intuitively belong there. Anything left in your boxes after a certain amount of time might not be something you need and can donate to a newbie scrapper.

My other tip (even though you just asked for one) is to hang supplies on hangers in the closet. Hang onto clear bags that have handles and put projects into them, and hang them up. Then when you have time you can browse through your personal closet store for a new creation.

  10. Annette D says:

My favorite place to go for organizing goodies is the Dollar General store, I always find cute bins and odds and ends to organize my space.

  11. Kristi says:

Fun tags! What a great way to personalize your storage! Here’s my favorite organizational tip: I put a few nails in the wall above my desk spaced the appropriate distance apart to ‘hang’ up my 12×12 sheet protectors. I usually do my layouts in batches (edit photos, then pick out paper, create layout, embellish, journal). When I get the photos for a new batch of layouts to work on, I put them in sheet protectors (one for each layout) and then hang them up on the nails. Then I pick out papers and embillishments and add them to my hanging sheet protectors essentially creating my own ‘kits’. Then when I am ready to scrap I just have to grab a sheet protector and a few basic supplies and I’m all ready to create! What I love about this process is that my layouts in progress are all visable on the wall!

  12. Amanda says:

I am not the most organized person, especially with my scrapbook stuff, I live in a condo with two kids and a husband and there is just not a lot of room (we are looking at houses so hopefully I will have a scrapbook room soon). So my favorite organizing tip is putting like things together!

  13. I adore my kitchen organizer from IKEA that I use for all my letter stickers. Here is a picture…http://monicamcneill.typepad.com/life_without_filters_365/2009/02/one-of-my-favorite-things.html

  14. Carol Wehner says:

I’m a “trash to treasure” kind of girl. We bought 2 unfinished wood cabinets from a discount lumber store. I added large scraps of beadboard paneling to the sides and painted them white. I chose to use completely different handles for each drawer and door. We added a scrap piece of countertop over them and now I have a terrific workspace with storage! Love it!

  15. Cynthia says:

My tip is to periodically PURGE! It’s important to get rid of the stuff you’ll never use, so your scrapspace stays current. (The only thing is…I need to follow my own advice – I’ve passed on some stuff to my 7yo daughter, but she’s a hoarder. I’ll just blame that on her dad. ;) )

  16. JPScraps says:

I have 2…. Reuse those candle jars. I bought a bunch of little glass ones after Christmas and now they hold photo corners, buttons, brads…The other one is to make use of doors for hanging storage. I have a 2 door cabinet and finally added hooks on the doors for my mini stamps, extra page protectors, & anything else I can hang.

  17. Carrie says:

My all time favourite organizational tip is slatboard on the walls. It is the best for displaying inspiration and goodies that I want to use on my pages… check out my room!!

  18. Becky Pipes says:

I use a cupcake stand in my scrap space. It holds smaller jars and bowls of embellishments and keeps them within reach. Plus I use something that would normally be tucked away in a cupboard somewhere.

I got my June mag yesterday – your craft room looks so lovely! I especially like your spools of ribbon storage idea!!!

  19. Carly says:

Great idea! My org tip I love is storing clear stamps in binders in page protectors with the stamped image on the outside so you can see every image as you flip through the binder.

  20. Katie says:

I am brand-new to crafting and such but my fave new organization idea is my coupon organizer, made from a photo album. Each slot has a number for a specific type of coupon, with a master list in the front of the album. It’s easy and I keep it my car to whip out anywhere I go!

  21. Shanon Gibson says:

The tags are adorable! I just bought a silverware holder from Ikea that I use for my ribbon storage. I just feed my ribbon through the holes and pull it out as I need it. I can see all of my ribbon and it is in one place so I can move around from the dining room to my scrap room with ease.

  22. Shir Benovich says:

I’m terible when it comes to organizing!
From time to time I force myself to clean my workspace and whenever I’m done creating I even try to put the main tools in their place – but abput 95% of the time – I use a small area of my scrapbooking table – the rest is covered with tools and papers…
    Happy NSD!

  23. Tara Moffatt says:

My favorite organization tip would have to be for ribbon. I take small pieces of ribbon, wrap it around a piece of cardboard, and store it in clear DVD cases. That way I can see them and store them easily.

  24. Carrie says:

My storage hint is to keep everything compact–I have a rolling organizer, a tote organizer, and a cardboard box of mini albums, and that’s it!

  25. Marty says:

I love getting baskets, trays and other items at yard sales and finding unique ways to use them in my scrapbook room. My husband also built me a vertical 12×12 paper holder that fits into my bookcase. So cool!

  26. Leslie G says:

I’m not organized at all, but my mom is! I like the way she uses all different sized clear plastic containers to hold all her punches, scissors, ribbon, etc. I would have to first go out and buy cute coordinating bins to use your adorable tags! Thanks!!

  27. LisaK says:

IKEA We used the closet systems for my scraproom and then a bunch of their kitchen organzing items along my desk area. Great prices and lots of options to customize! Here is a link to some of the items I have found
    http://frannykatescreativestate.blogspot.com/2008/08/scrap-cave-re-do.html

  28. lauriewe says:

Best organization tip- took me two scrap areas and 13 years to learn- organize by how you scrap or create- I no longer keep sets together because I scrap by color! Now I can find what I want quickly!

  29. Brianna T. says:

My organization tip…put ribbon on doll pins and throw them in a jar by color! Looks pretty on a shelf and so easy to find the ribbon you need!

  30. Lisa Stenz says:

I try to organize all of my goodies by color. For some reason it just looks better to me and I tend to be more creative in my space when it is organized that way. Of course I keep all of my products together (i.e. cardstock, ribbon, etc.) but I always organize them by color. *Ü*

  31. Jeannine Brenner says:

My scrapromm is fairly neat and organized. I have two shelves from pettery barn (green) that I love. I keep supplies in clear shoe containers (very cheap) and lable them…adhesive, journal blocks, alphabets, stickers, die cuts, etc. It is easy to see what is inside each clear container..if I don’t see it..I don’t use it. So that is my organizational tip!

  32. Kari says:

I have a hard time with the organizational stuff, but I guess my best tip to myself has been going through my stuff (I don’t have a lot) and finding what I think I might need and putting it in a (clean, empty) pizza box. Then when I sit down to do my page or work on my mini album, I take from the things I have in the box. This makes it easier to transport, too, from the bedroom to the dining room or wherever I might be working.

  33. Jenny McGee says:

My paper is in a paper taker that I keep in my big storage tote. It is sorted by color and pattern. I like to keep it in the larger tote so it is always ready for on the go scrapbooking or a crop. Thanks for a chance to win.

  34. kim a. says:

My favorite tip is to purge my space once a month- not only does my space stay neater but I have been able to share items with my son’s 1st grade class. Happy NSD!

  35. Kimberly Ann says:

I also organize by color. I’ve got all of my paper and embellishments organized by color and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I need for a layout.

  36. Brenlee says:

My newest favorite organization tip is with clear stamps! CK magazine Feb 2009 suggest you place your clear stamps in a clear CD case. I finally did it last night and IT ROCKS! During spring break we cleaned out our garage and my husband was throwing away old CD from MLM business. When I looked in the trash (he was not in the garage at the time), I recovered 99% of the cases -SCORE! :)

  37. Amanda D. says:

My idea is for scraps of paper: I took an accordion file folder and assigned each pocket a color, in the order of the rainbow. When I need a small piece of red (or whatever), I grab the folder and know just where to look. It lets me keep lots of scraps all in one place without looking messy and getting disorganized.

  38. kimmie says:

my favorite tip is to use a mechanic’s magnetic try for your eyelets, brads anything metal so its easy clean up. I also love to keep a bin handy for the scraps

  39. Suzanne Trickel says:

My organization is keeping my papers together by color family – the 8 1/2 X 11.

The 12X12 I have by “theme” – I can pull out a section depending upon which scrapbook I am working on.

    Thanks!

  40. Britiney says:

I keep all of my card stock in hanging files and I file the scraps with the full sheets. That way I can search for scraps before cutting into a new full sheet of the same color. I love your tags!!

  41. Anna says:

I am using my baby food jars to hold all the tiny brads and other embellishments after I open them. I love small jars, and they are really cute with spray painted lids, all lined up on the shelf.

  42. alyciaIN says:

Your tags are adorable! I wish I was better organized, so I guess I’ll have to read the June issue (and these comments) to get more ideas. I have managed to organize the bulk of my supplies using two large shelving units with drawer units that fit on the shelves. I also love the cropper hopper paper envelopes to organize everything from papers to stickers & embelishments for my projects.

  43. Paola Norman says:

Those are great. My fav. organizational tip is too store cutttlebug folders and stamps in protective sheets then put them in binders for easy access and storage.
    Happy Scrapbooking Day!

  44. Cyndi says:

I love my label maker!!! I have little plastic boxes with lids that I store alot of my embellishments in, like flowers, paint, ribbon, buttons, etc. I used my label maker to label them all so I know what is in each one. I also labeled the outside of my Cropper Keeper envelopes with what is in each one.

  45. Tamikko says:

I’ve always wanted to know what you can do with the label maker. The name does explain it, but I really need to see it in action to sell me on it.
I think this is my favorite tip for organizing. I’ve been trying to organize my space for 2 weeks now. I’ve taken a break so it doesn’t look like a bomb went off later today for company. However, Monday I’ll be back to work on it. I now know where the furniture will be and what kind of things I need to get from Ikea. I just need to make piles and figure out ‘how big?’ and ‘how many?’. Labeling them has been a mystery.
I like this idea. Especially the sparkle, the pink, the ease and the look. Thanks for sharing this with us, and thanks for the chance to win.

  46. Carrie says:

Slatboard ! It allows me to display inspiration and all the goodies and things that I want to use… check it out in my room!

    http://thatsscrap.blogspot.com/

  47. My biggest organization tip is to keep it pretty. It can be the most functional and organized room on the planet but if you don’t love it, you won’t keep it clean. :D

  48. Betsy says:

Open containers…no lids so that I can pull out the container and immediately get to digging!

  49. Julie says:

Color organization!! I don’t know how I functioned before I had everything sorted by color. It literally took me weeks to go through all of my paper and supplies to get everything organized, but I am so much happier now. :)

  50. Tiffany E. says:

I am an organization fanatic! I have only limited space for scrapbooking, so I have organized my “scrapbook corner” with Billy system shelves and Kasset boxes from IKEA. The bookshelves have shelves you can move, so when my storage needs change, so do the shelves! Everything is neat, organized, and labeled AND is right where I can reach it. (Any other supplies I want to keep are on shelves in the office!) I love being organized in at least 1 place in my house!
