NSD: Storage Solution that Sparkles

megan

I have exciting news! My craft room is featured in our June “Creative Spaces” column. It’s been a loooong work in progress, so making it to this point is a definite milestone for me. I can’t wait to share it with you soon. (You’ll have to let me know what you think when you see the column.) In the meantime, I’ve prepared a small (and super easy) organization project from my space in honor of today’s festivities.

STORAGE LABELS

As I imagine most creative peeps are, I’m a very visual person. I like things to sparkle…even the boring stuff like storage labels. Thus, I made these glittery guys, which hang from my punch storage system (a hanging shoe rack from IKEA). Here’s how to create your own dazzling identifiers:

Step 1:

Punch squares from cardstock. Since I used the pretty pink tag rims from Making Memories, I used their square punch to get my cardstock squares.

Step 2:

Frame punched pieces with metal rim tags.

Step 3:

I used the Making Memories Tag Maker to seal my metal edge tags around my cardstock squares.

Step 4:

Print labels. I used a label maker, but you can also write or type your labels on cardstock and adhere them to your cardstock squares.

My punches are organized by shape/style, so I made labels for each category (circles, squares, borders, images and scallops).

label1

Step 5:

Pierce your tags on either side of the label and insert brads. My pink glitter brads are from Doodlebug Design.

Step 6:

Punch a notch in the top of your tag. The notch tool I used is from Making Memories.

Step 7:

Thread and tie coordinating ribbon through the slot.

Step 8:

Adhere the tag to the appropriate punch drawer with a safety pin.

These come together SO quickly. In a few simple steps you can have your own organizers that are so much prettier than basic white office supply tags. Let the colors of your creative space direct the colors of your tags for a finished look that really shines.

NSD GIVEAWAY #3

How would you like your own set of custom tags? They don’t have to be for punches, either. They can be for anything you think needs a tag (ribbon jars, sticker drawers, stamp bins, you name it). Well, I’m willing to make two lucky people their own set of six custom tags. If I randomly select your name, I’ll work with you to get you the storage words and color scheme that works for your space*. Interested? Need more convincing? How about I throw in a Making Memories Desktop Organizer (in kraft) to sweeten the deal?

HOW TO ENTER

Leave a comment on this post, stating your favorite organization tip. This contest is for today and today only, so don’t delay. BTW, I know our blog timer is all messed up. Don’t worry, I’ll factor that in when pulling qualifying comments in to the drawing.

That’s all for now, folks. See ya again in a couple of hours. Until then, I look forward to reading your ideas!

Megan Hoeppner, Creative Editor

* Note: There are limited options when it comes to the color of your tag rims, but I can do them in silver to complement any space. Thanks.

My biggest tip is to clean up after every project to keep you work area “workable”

  2. tape says:

I keep my letter stickers in page protectors in a binder.

  3. Kristyn G says:

One of my favorites was actually in CK a few months back. I use large FedEx boxes (recycled from work) to store my 12×12 papers. the medium size works great for 8.5×11. The ends are covered with red paper and sit right above my desk on the first shelf! Love the “FREE” part about this storage solution!

  4. Jennifer Tenney says:

I have been using a special can opener to open my soup cans. After washing these out and removing the label I decorate them with my own label and they hold everything from paper clips to brads to stickers. Once I have made a label for around the can and also for the top of the lid I use my crop-a-dial to punch a hole in the lid and the top side of the can and I string ribbon through and tie them to a shower bar that I have hung up. The shower bar I bought at a thrift store for $1 and the cans are free.

  5. Annette D says:

Another way I like to organize is to put the matching paper, embellishments, and coordinating items in a page protector so I’m ready to make a layout in a zip!

  6. jodi says:

I organize my patterned paper by color, have a special drawer for ribbon, keep my brads organized by color in a thrifted spice rack, and always try to clean up after I’m done creating. We’re moving next month, and I’ll have my own scrap room (no more sharing with hubby and more space), and I’m SOOOO looking forward to getting super organized. These labels would be great! Looking forward to seeing your space in June’s issue. :)

  7. Kat says:

I just finished reading the article about your DIY craft room! Great job! The best organization tip for me is keeping my materials in a visual place, if I can’t see what I have, I won’t use it. I’m also in the process of redoing my craft room, so IKEA is very inspirational. Thank you for all your posts today, I’m having so much fun.

  8. AngMomof3 says:

My favorite organization tip is to use repurposed/recycled containers for storage. I am currently using a band-aid box, a cute frog ceramic planter, a licorice tub… they’re super clever looking, inexpensive and green!

  9. Sheri K says:

My June issue just arrived today–can’t wait to take a look! My newest organization tip came from someone who organizes her Stickles in a decorated tin with a 2″ piece of foam on the bottom with an “x” cut into the foam. The Stickles can then be stored upside down, are easily accessible and you can tell the color from the bottle. I’m going to work on that as soon as I finish working on grad party stuff!

  10. Hannah says:

My organizational tip isn;t for things, but for me. I have to program everything into my phone and set an alarm for each one otherwise I forget about events. This keeps me going where I chould be and on time.

  11. Jen Cox says:

I LOVE your tags. My current organization involves Mason Jars for all of my brads and buttons and embellishments. I like that they are clear and easily accessible — having tags to dress them up would be awesome! Thanks for the opportunity.

  12. Twila says:

I have a beautiful antique dresser in my scrapbook room that hides a lot of organizational disfunction. I can put mini albums, paint, paper, supplies–everything (okay, well not everything!LOL!) in it.

  13. I love my binders for clear stamps in page protectors, and my old candle sampler boxes for brads and other small embellishments!

  14. Annette D says:

I already put 2 tips on here, but wanted to say I loved reading everyone else’s tips on organizing. I got some great ideas!

  15. Lynn says:

Every day I take 10 minutes and set my timer and organize something on my scrap table. It sounds like it wouldn’t do much but it really makes a difference after a few days!

  16. Rachel says:

I bought two little kids storage things from Target. They have 12 bins each and I can use a different bin for all of my goodies.

  17. Angela says:

I like to use Prima Flower jars for my ribbon. It looks so tidy, and cute on my shelf. I love seeing the colors and having it all organized ready to grab.

  18. cindy says:

My favorite tip is to have my paper stored vertically, I can fit ALOT in a small space. Thanks for the giveaway!

  19. Jill J. says:

I organize my ribbon by putting like colors together in baggies.

  20. Katherine says:

I got my CK magazine today, and I loved your scrapbook room! I really liked, and want to copy the thing you did with your ribbon, I love how it is hanging in the room like art. I like the hanging tags with the pictures of what is inside too. My organizational thing is that I like to have everything in it’s place and to straighten my space up after every page or project and then do a full clean up when I am done. I find that if my desk is messy it causes the creative juices to be halted and makes me not even want to sit down and start to scrap.

  21. Candice says:

Those tags are ADORABLE!!! My favorite organizational tip is to purge often. I find that I use part of a sheet of stickers here and half a paper pack there and things just really add up when you are storing all of it. So once a month I purge my supplies and give them away!

  22. Summer Braxton says:

Oooo, nice prize. My fave org tip is to put the vinyl stencils I cut with my cricut onto a page protector sheet and in a binder. It makes them reusable.

  23. Deanne says:

my favorite organiation tip is to put clear stamps in a sticker binder, the pages come in differant styles so you can fit any size stamp set in the pockets. easy to store and easy to take places

  24. Cass says:

My best tip is to be realistic with what you will use. If you don’t need it, give it away! It reduces clutter and makes life so much easier.

  25. Roberta says:

Oh my…just love the “pink glitter” and black tags…we just moved, downsized and I spray painted wicker hampers and black wicker luggae baskets that I’ve had for over 20 years with “black” gloss spray paint…they look fantastic. Wish I had done this a long time ago…why do we wait so long. Check out these blog posts for the fun details…http://con-tain-it.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/02/black-spray-paint.html…http://con-tain-it.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/04/t-g-i-f-ffabulous-friday.html
Anyhow…I would love these “tags” for these baskets…because you cannot see inside them…it’s out of site out of mind…but these pink glitter tags would be marvelous!

  26. Reel Girl says:

Canvas bins from The Container Store on shelves, baby! Can’t live without in my scrap/sewing room….but they don’t have labels….YET!

  27. Diana says:

My favorite organization tip is I outsource it to my daughter when I can get away with it. Otherwise it is to have plenty as cabinet space. Label it and add cabinets as your supply stash grows.

  28. Samantha says:

I would have to emphasize on the fact that you got your shoe organizer from IKEA and use it for punches. Just stepping into that store inspires me to organize… that’s a good tip. Go to IKEA and look around. :-)

  29. Lynn Marsh says:

I think my best tip is to use all those pizza boxes we all love getting in the mail… I use mine for all of my scraps. I try and organize by color to make it easier when I’m looking for something in particular!

  30. Jeannine B. says:

I think the organization rule that works for me is – really thinking first about how you use things and how you work creatively in your space – then organize/store in ways that better serve your style!

  31. cards4ever says:

My organization tip is to paper clip scraps of paper by collection or color.

  32. MomStarr says:

Use old containers around the house and personalize them. Make them pretty, colorful, or just practical.

  33. Pamk says:

wow great contest. I have finally picked out my desk/book shelves for my scrapbook nook and am going to get it next weekend. So this would perfect timing if I won. After that I’ll need some shelves to hang on the wall above it and i have my nook set up.

  34. Linda M says:

I would love this! I love labels and my best tip is to label everything! I have a label maker too and it looks so tidy–but not pretty like yours.

  35. Sheri says:

Great contest! Organization is not at all my strong suit. I am an organizer wanna be. Best I can give you is baskets. I use them to organize (or try to) just about everything in my house.

  36. Robyn says:

I bought 2 of the wire cube storage set from Target and I used one to build as recommended and the other set (with zip electrical ties) to make shelved inside the 16″ cubes. Works great to organize the bottom of my closet. All for about $20!

  37. ivy says:

i love glass jars! i alo love to use little suitcases for storing ribbon.

  38. Kathy says:

Love to do me some organizing. And really love new ideas on how to do it. Thanks Kathy

  39. I don’t even have a proper room for scrapbook. I’m using grandpa’s room to do the scrapping, but it is basically a store! I just kept all my albums in an antique cabinet left by grandpa and use shoe box for my supplies and keep those pizza box for my papers.

  40. Fran says:

I put all my coordinating paper in 12 x 12 Craft Keepers – including the scraps. Then I put the Craft Keepers in the upright files and organize them by colors. This keeps the scraps with the larger sheets and I can find what I want without searching around for my scrap bin. I also keep scraps of solid card stock in a hanging folder labeled with each color. Makes using up scrap much easier for me.

  41. Rhonda says:

I use organizers from the hardware store, used to store nails, screws, etc. and use those to organize all my small items. I have one for brads and I sort them by category or colors, one for my eyelets, and so forth. Then, I type labels and put on the front of each little drawer so I know where everything is. Then, I have these all lined up in a bookshelf.

  42. Jen D. says:

Well I have a lot of open space storage in my craft room which makes it difficult when trying to have a clean look to the room. I store all of my ribbons, single stamps, etc. in some metal buckets purchased at Target in their dollar section. I also have four clear jar canisters for pretty ribbon that I want people to see. These are all featured on top of my open concept book cases. I am still searching for some solutions to my storage problems with everything being open. Any ideas?

  43. Elizabeth says:

Very cute tags or labels. I have a special fondness to labels. I label a lot of what I organize. Some work well and some not so well, but it is still fun trying and making labels.
I have been making wooden bird houses so of course I had to make a label for them. Birdhouse Betty is the name of my creations. So with a cute pictue and fun scrap paper and a little raffia tied around the birdhouse it’s ready to go to my friend for her birthday. Keep Creating!

  44. E F Levin says:

    Love this advice. Thanks.

  45. I found that if you storage your embellishments by color it takes less space and easy to find what you are looking for. I have metal open bins I store everything in.

  46. Kathleen Murphy says:

Love the idea of winning some storage labels. I could use some on the bins I am starting to organize. My favorite tip is to use a zipper top clear bag to organize each color of the rainbow for my scraps. I am always saving scraps, but then I never know where I put them. By organizing them by color, you can go to exactly the color you need and then just look for the shade. Very economical use of paper!!

  47. Sandi Farestrand says:

I love the idea of organization but somehow I have acquired so much “stuff” and it isn’t getting organized by itself. I need help and I am very excited about these ideas coming my way. Like organizing by color! What a concept!

  48. aussiemarina says:

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh these are darling………i have just cleaned my scraproom…..and these would be like icing on a cake………

  49. janice sneddon says:
