Happy Friday, CK blog readers. My name is Susan R. Opel, and I am an Editor for Paper Crafts magazine. It’s a pleasure to chitchat with all of you about some serious crafty goodness.
While scrapbooking has always been my first love, I’ve found that card making is a pretty amazing way to use my stash of gorgeous stuff. And once I’ve made a card, I can send it to someone to brighten their day with something that I’ve made just for them. It’s a pretty fantastic feeling.
Just like scrapbookers celebrate National Scrapbooking Day in early May, card makers have their own holiday called World Card Making Day the first Saturday in October – this year it is October 3. The purpose behind the holiday is A) to celebrate the creativity of handmade cards and the personal connection that they create between friends and family and B) to kick-off (and get a head start on ) the holiday card making season. And if I’ve been paying attention to the world lately, it sure seems like lots of people are interested in the homemade and handmade. What if YOU made your Christmas cards with your scrapbooking supplies and started on World Card Making Day?
Not sure how to get started? Oh, boy, do I have the perfect solution to that problem. Let me introduce you to Paper Crafts magazine’s fourth installation of Holiday Cards & More which just hit newsstands on August 25!

Holiday Cards and More
Inside the covers of this delectable holiday treat, you will find over 100 festive card ideas sure to inspire you. Take a look at a few of my favorites!

Winter Wishes by Charlene Austin
I love the retro feel and simplicity of Charlene’s card. You could do this one easily! A couple pieces of cardstock, a border punch, some patterned paper, all topped off with ribbon and a rub-on. This wouldn’t be too hard to reproduce in duplicate to send to all of your friends and family.
Folk Tree Card by Kim Hughes

- Folk Tree Card by Kim Hughes
As one of our Go-to Gals at Paper Crafts magazine, we can always count on Kim to create simple and cute cards like this one. With a few cuts and pieces of paper, a quick machine stitch and some rhinestones, Kim has created an adorable and homey card that captures the essence of handmade love. You could use a pen to mimic the stitching or skip it altogether, and you’d still have a super cute result!
Son is Given Card by Lisa Johnson

Son Is Given Card by Lisa Johnson
Sometimes you may want to make a one-of-a-kind creation for someone special. Whether it is for your child’s teacher, an elderly neighbor or a dear friend, this is when you can go all out and create a card with gorgeous detail like Lisa’s. I love all of the touches she adds with layered paper, ink, an intricate border punch, ribbon and tiny jingle bells. This card says, “I took time out of my busy schedule to create this for just for you.”
I’m feeling awfully merry after looking at these cards, aren’t you? What if you and your scrapbooking pals celebrated World Card Making Day this October 3rd by trying your hand at card making? To give you a little inspiration, I have two copies of Holiday Cards & More: Volume 4 (which includes much more than cards!) to give away. Leave me a comment by Monday, August 31, about your plans for World Card Making Day or your Holiday 2009 cards.
Happy Card Making!
Susan

Hi Susan! My plans involve making lots and lots of cards. Fun!
Hi Susan,
Are you related to Beth? I’m thinking about having a card making party with maybe 5 crafty, fun friends. I love working with other people around since I benefit from their creativity. I’m thinking set up stations for each card and maybe we work as fast as we can until the music stops and then we need to move to the next station, like Musical Chairs….
Anyway, ideas in the form of the special issue would be GREAT!
Thanks!
I don’t have any world cardmaking day plans right now. But, I could ask my sister or friend to come over and we could start making cards. I guess I better mark it on my calendar and start inviting. How fun???
I think maybe I’ll invite over some friends and have a fun day scrapping and making cards too!
World Card Making day will either be spent in my craft room… or spending time with the hubby because he’ll be deploying soon. Maybe I’ll make a card for him!
oh I will definitely be making some cards on world card making day
I would love to take the time to hide in my scrapbooking room and do something new and creative – new cards, new pages, new stuff!
World Card Day sounds like a good day to stay in and scrap and make cards!!!!
Gorgeous cards! I haven’t made a plan but I think I’ll make cards for my family, like last year! It’s so much fun!
I do love all the inspiration you’ve shown but I don’t make my cards for the holidays. It’s just too crazy around here. So I opt for a photo card of my three, crazy boys!
I hope to be making cards!!
I want to participate in World Card Making Day and I am starting to sketch out some Christmas card ideas…and make a Christmas card send-out list…I definitely need to get started soon!
I’ll definitely make some cards that day! It’s a great idea to use that stockpile of Christmas papers I have.
I’ll be making lots of Christmas cards. Some to send and some for Cards for Heroes.
I don’t have plans for that day since I’ve not done a lot of cardmaking but I do have a plan to send a few handmade cards for Christmas this year. I’m going to start small.
I’ve been working on my Christmas cards for about a month now! I love card making! I am doing a huge craft show in November, so have lots to accomplish before then!
I’d love to find a place to make my cards! Otherwise, I’ll be siting alone at my desk!
I won’t be able to make cards on World Card Making day because I will be in my car on the way to Gulf Shores for a week at the beach!
But I do always make my Christmas cards to send out. I usually start in early November.
I doubt I’ll do anything special for world card day but I sure would love to go to a crop. I’ll try to make some cards at home and check out my favorite web sites that day.
Looking forward to this issue – thanks for the chance to win it!
I’ve already got the photo picked out for our holiday cards this year…it’s a pic of my kids all geared up for skiing (from our Spring Break trip)…most likely won’t start those ’til Nov. though, because for World Cardmaking Day, I hope to get some cards cranked out – my stash is the lowest it’s ever been after a very busy summer!
CKC is in town on October 3rd, so that’s where I’ll be!
I’m hoping to attend a card making class on World Card Making Day– if not I’ll just hole up in my scrapbook room and makes cards to my heart’s content.
I have a few ideas for my holiday cards, but nothing set in stone yet. I can’t wait to get this magazine for inspiration!
I still don’t know what I’ll do for Christmas cards yet, so will be looking for more ideas!
This year is a big one for me. I’m newly into card making and have decided to make a unique card for everyone on my list. Card Making Day will help me get organized and well on my way to completing my goal.
I’m not sure, yet what my plans are… I’m expecting in a few weeks, so that may put a cramp on this year’s crafty Christmas cards. Likely, I’ll still make a few for close friends and family and pop a picture of my new little babe inside!
i’ll be setting aside that day to work on holiday thank you cards.
Ooooh! I wasn’t planning on making Christmas cards this year, but I really like the folk tree one, so maybe I will!
i haven’t really made that many cards but i will have to try some for my niece she’ll be 4 this year and my fathers bday, maybe halloween cards for my friends at the campground
I’m hoping to make my Christmas cards this year. I’ve got a few ideas bopping around my head but haven’t decided on a final design yet.
I’ve enjoyed making digital cards the past few years for Christmas. Does the idea book give any digi suggestions?
Reading this post makes me want to schedule a girl’s day and get together all of my friends to work on cards!
I don’t have any particular plans yet, but I’ll definitely sit down and try to replenish my card box. As far as Christmas goes, I usually just do a family photo card for my bigger list. But I like to make special handmade ones for the kids’ teachers.
I am not sure I will be able to complete any cards on that specific day because I will be driving hs band to a competition on the school bus. I have plans with my neighbor and fellow scrapbooker to make our Christmas cards sometime around the 1st of October.
I love the idea of a card making day! Have been meaning to do that anyway, but I usually end up trying to “catch up” on my scrapbooking. Not this time!!! World Card Making Day is now mine!!!
I want to try to craft all day long on WCMD…. hopefully making a bunch of cards, mybe I can get an early start on my holiday cards & actually send them out before Christmas!
I think this would be a wonderful idea. I have friends who have been coming to my party room and we have been scrapbooking every week. This would be a great time to make cards.
That is the typical day my SB group mets, so we will shifting gears to cardmaking onthat day. YAY, it’ll be a blast!
I LOVE world card making day. I think that is when I first became interested in card making (I’m a scrapper). I’ve learned so much since my first attempts. I’d really like to get started on Halloween and Christmas cards…they are just so fun!!
I am a card maker and a scrapbooker, and on Oct 3rd I am going to at my first ever table selling my wares! A card book would sure help my mojo!
My church is holding a craft bazaar in November. i’m hoping to make cards to sell at the bazaar. World Card-Making Day will be a good starting point for my project.
I love making cards
I am leaving my full-time job to work at a scrapbooking store! I am finally getting to puruse my passion and couldn’t be more excited!!! It would be exciting to participate in World Cardmaking Day at the store, so glad I read your blog post. Thank you!
These special issues are always so inspiring! I love what I have seen so far!
I’m already working on my Holiday cards! I normally pick one design and then make up a ton, but I think this year I am going to make more than one design. That way everyone gets something a little different.
I have been trying out some different ideas with my stamps for Christmas cards–then I see new stamps and want those! HA, This is such a fun hobby and I plan on makin cards as long as i can.
I’m hoping to start on my Christmas cards that day! Can’t wait!
I was unaware that World Card Making Day existed! I am super excited now and will have to start making plans to celebrate. Thanks for the heads-up!
I have often thought of making my Christmas cards, however, we are a crazy family who sends out about 100 cards! I’m still thinking that I might give it a shot…it will obviously be a very simple but classy style!
World Card Making Day is the perfect time to make all of my Christmas cards. I select sketches in the weeks before and use them to create a variety of cards for everyone on my list! I can always use more ideas!
I have bought the magazine in the past and really enjoyed it! There are many local craft stores in the area that are Making plans for the big day, so I will attend one with some of my card making friends.
