Weekly Warm-Up: Raise Awareness through Cropping & Shopping

Weekly Warm Up: Raise Awareness through Cropping & ShoppingMy mom is fighting the good fight. Last October, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, she’s been going through rigorous treatments, fighting for her life—fighting for multiple lives, really, as she is the nucleus of our family, the light at the center of it all! It’s because of support and research that my mom is here to fight. You see, she has an aggressive form of cancer that up until relatively recently made it next to impossible for those that had it to survive. Now, I’m delighted to say, there’s a special therapy that greatly increases the survival rate of this kind of cancer. Each and every thing we do to show support makes steps like this possible.

In the spirit of making strides, we want to welcome October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in a very positive way, by uniting in this good fight.  Like me, so many on our magazine team have first-hand experience with this common killer, just as, I imagine, do many of you. Rather than dwell on this sobering fact, let’s use it as a motivator that springs us into action. Deal? Deal!

Sinding well wishes and strenghtn to your mom. My Sil is still fighting the good fight against breast cancer and has been for almost 10 yrs. We found out she had breast cancer around the same time my dad was diagnosed with bladder cancer. We lost him in 01. So I support cancer reaseach in all of its forms.

  12. I am a 3 yr breast cancer survivor. My sister has been a survivor for a little over a year. We are section of the breast cancer survivor population which is not as well researched or even as well funded… we are young survivors with a genetic predisposition. I am very happy to see so many companies supporting the cause… but it’s not awareness we need. We are all aware! :) It’s the funding to continue the fight and continue making progress so that this will be a different disease for our daughters, maybe even one they won’t have to fight like we did.

  13. Lisa says:

I’m thrilled to hear that your mom is responding well to treatments. I wish her continued and complete healing.

My mom as diagnosed last August with breast cancer. She has her last Herceptin infusion this Friday. I am so thankful for the research that made this medicine available to combat the HER2 protein.

For my mom’s 60th birthday this year, our family and friends gathered at a local park as a suprise to her. We all wore our pink shirts. In her honor, we let go 60 pink balloons. Each balloon contained a message reminding women to perform their monthly self-exams and to get their annual mammograms.

We were not able to do the Race fo the Cure this year due to mom’s treatment schedule, but my mom, my daughter, and I did crop at our local scrapbook store during the ScrapPink event.

I love scrapbooking and am thrilled that the companies that make scrapbook supplies take such an active role in the fight against breast cancer.

  14. Melinda says:

I’m sure every family has been touched by breast cancer in some way. Thanks for letting us know about these products that can help find a cure!

  15. Dani says:

My mom, too, is fighting this awful disease – for the second time. Her final chemo treatment is this Friday. I am sorry that your mom is going through it, too :( Let’s keep fighting together to come up with a way to prevent it!!!

  19. Valarie says:

Breast Cancer has also affected our family. Four years ago, our 21 year old daughter was diagnosed and just Friday, my sister-in-law. I don’t think I know a single person that has not had someone close to them battle this disease. Thanks for helping to make a difference.

  20. Mel says:

    Megan,
Thoughts with your mom on her good fight. Never let her think anything but that she can win. Our family has also fought this fight—too many times, but I remain hopeful that there is a cure out there. ScrapPink and other movements like it help us toward that day!

  21. I am wishing your mom the best!

  24. Carol W says:

May God bless you, your mom, and your family with the strength it takes for keep fighting this fight.

I had my own scare with breast cancer twice and I don’t want to face another one.

Thank you for encouraging all of us women to help each other and thank you to your sponsoring companies!

  25. This is awesome! How cool is it that so many manufacturers are getting involved! Love it!

God Bless your mother and anyone who is effected by this horrific disease. Race for the Cure!

  26. It’s frightning to see even rather young friends (in their early 40′s) getting this cancer. Supporting the research is so importing and I am happy to see the pink ribbon movement has become world wide. Best wishes to your mum and to all of you who has fought this battle, and hugs to all of you who have been effected by it.

  27. Robyn says:

Hello. Your page is gorgeous! I ran last year in the Race for Breast Cancer in Chicago. I ran with a friend and her sister in memory of their mom (and my “mom”). She was like the mom to all of us. When they packed their stuff up in our last year of highschool to move to Arizona it was heart breaking. When we all heard they were returning to Chicago it was heartbreaking as well. She was returning to be closer to family that could support her and help her fight her battle. The breast cancer didn’t kill her. She survived. She survived just long enough to find out she had a brain tumor. Anyways, Im getting all teary eyed now, so I just wanted to say, your mom is in my prayers. Keep fighting the fight! Good Luck!

  28. Nicole says:

Hey Megan, this is a great post.Your story is nice. I love your layout. I attended Scrap Pink with the Manhattan Scrapbooks about 2 weeks ago. Check out my blog- http://scrapinsweetheart.blogspot.com/2009/09/scrap-pink-and-more.html
to hear about my time at Scrap Pink. All the money raised that day went to breast cancer.

  29. Teri M says:

So good to see all those scrapbook companies doing their best to fund research. My MIL had a breast removed just after my DS was born and now, almost 7 years later she is still doing great!!!!!

  30. Paola Norman says:

I wish your mom health and a long and beautiful life that is Cancer free. Peace to her and all the have to deal with his disease.

  31. Egjk says:

  36. Danielle says:

Great strides are being made every day in this awful battle. Keep the faith, God is in control. :)

  37. Maya says:

It is ironic that on Breast Cancer Awareness month, I would find out that one of my dearest friends has been diagnosed with the disease. She is the 3rd person I know who has to battle a form of cancer.

I am touched by the urgency in the need to find the cure for women like her and I hope and pray that we continue to seek new ways of knowledge to fight it.

  38. Carol says:

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as you fight the battle of this disease. This was an excellent article and thank you for promoting the companies who support the research in finding cures.

  39. I’ll say some prayers for your mom. I’m receiving chemo right now for breast cancer and I thank God everyday that they have made such leaps and bounds with breast cancer research. I hope someday that all cancers can be treated with a vaccine. Eradicate it like polio. It will happen.

  40. Holly S says:

I am counting my blessings this time of year thinking about how lucky I am to not be touched by breast cancer. No one in my extended family (including 3 sisters) have had breast cancer. To be honest, I have only known one woman who fought breast cancer and unfortunately she did not make it. It saddens me reading all the cancer stories-praying for a cure real soon!

  41. Beth Warren says:

I’d love to win this giveaway as I am doing a volunteer project at my local hospital and would love to win supplies to use for that.
