On this day, we in the U.S. celebrate Flag Day, a day we wave our colors and honor “Old Glory.” Whether you’re in the U.S. or another country around the world, flags are a wonderful source of scrapbooking inspiration. They offer interesting color combinations, tried-and-true motifs, and unique design schemes that we can translate into eye-catching layout designs. A few of our talented Creating Keepsakes readers have done just that with “The Red, White, & Blue,” creating stunning layouts inspired by our flag’s colors. Take a look!
Katrina Simeck went with a very literal (and wonderful) translation, adding both the stars and the stripes to her festive “USA” layout. As you’re looking to your flag for inspiration, look for its colors in your striped patterned paper, which provides an excellent color-combination source for your designs.
Natalie Call’s page shows us that it’s okay to play with color when it comes to flag inspiration. She substituted the white in our flag’s red, white, and blue color scheme with kraft and she went with an alternate shade of blue for a look that’s both simple and completely striking. Use the colors found in your favorite flag designs as a starting point and see what kind of color combinations develop.
Whether you’re looking to your country’s flag, your state’s flag, or even your scout troop’s flag, you’ll likely find interesting motifs to pull into your design, just as Davinie Fiero has done with the bold stars on her page. It acts an attractive focal point on the page that immediately draws the eye to her title, which then leads you into the rest of her layout. How can you work a flag motif into your next project?
Flag Fun Facts (and a Giveaway!)
In honor of Flag Day, we thought we’d give away a red, white, and blue scrapbook prize package. Interested in winning? All you have to do is answer the following flag fun facts in the comments section of our blog. From the comments we receive by this Friday, June 18th, we’ll randomly select our winner. Sure, you can copy/paste the answers from the comments already received, but what’s the fun in that. See if you can’t discover the answers on your own and learn a bit more about our sacred colors in the process. Ready? Okay, let’s play!
1. Which U.S. president established June 14 as Flag Day?
2. What are the exact color shades featured on the U.S. flag? (Yes, we know white is technically not a color.)
3. Several countries have flags similar to the United States. Name one.
4. Which U.S. state gave us our 50th star on the flag?
5. Besides Flag Day, name two U.S. holidays on which the U.S. flag is commonly flown.
Good luck and happy Flag Day, friends!
