Weekly Warm-Up: Fun in the Sun–and Sand!

jorganheadshot Weekly Warm Up: Fun in the Sun and Sand!Hi, CK readers!  I’m Jorgan Staker, the newest member of the CK team.  I’m so excited to be an intern this summer at such a wonderful magazine!  I’ve been learning a lot, but so far my favorite part has been seeing all the fun and creative layouts that you readers have created to record those special memories.

Some of my favorite must-record memories are of summer.  From playing in the sprinklers to eating watermelon and popsicles,I love the variety of delightful activities that summer always brings. If you have plans to play at the beach this summer, what better way to remember those lazy summer days than with a beach inspired layout!

I love this beach layout by Mou Saha, shown in the July/August 2010 issue of Creating Keepsakes.  Mou really captures the look and feel of the sand on a summer day.  Here, she added Moon Dust from The Stencil Collection to give her photos a sandy texture.

“At the Beach” by Mou Saha, as seen in the July/August 2010 issue of Creating Keepsakes, page 29

This technique is simple and can be added to either photos or  a layout background to bring pizzazz to any summer page.  To re-create Mou’s sandy look, use these three simple steps.

1.   Working in small sections, apply glue to areas of sand in the photo.

2.  Spoon textured powder (you can use actual sand or fine-art sand) over glue.  Let dry, and then shake off excess powder.

3. Repeat previous two steps until picture is covered to your liking.  To create the look of shadow or depth, you can use different colored powders.

You can also use sand in your titles by using a fine-tipped applicator as a pen, spreading powder over it, and letting it dry.

For more great ways to create a sand texture on your summer layouts, don’t forget to check out the “CK Shows You How” column in the July/August issue of CK!

Happy summer fun!
