From Cards to Scrapbook Layouts

megan 200x300 From Cards to Scrapbook Layouts Some people are a little bit country, and others are little bit rock ‘n’ roll—just as some crafters are a little bit card-making, while others are a little bit scrapbooking. There’s no right or wrong approach when it comes to expressing yourself creatively. And whether you’re a little bit of this, a little bit of that, or a little bit of both, you’re sure to enjoy “Designer Challenge: From Layout to Cards,” one of the articles featured in the July/August 2010 issue of Creating Keepsakes magazine. In the article, we joined forces with our sister publication, Paper Crafts magazine, to challenge some their Paper Crafts Go-To Gals to create cards based off of scrapbook pages created by our own Dream Team members and contributing writers. Take a look at how a few of the participants found their inspiration, and see if doesn’t give you a few ideas of your own!

JenJockisch From Cards to Scrapbook Layouts

Jen Jockisch made this striking page for our feature. We love how she created a patriotic page with a nontraditional color combination.

KimKesti From Cards to Scrapbook Layouts

Kim Kesti was the lucky recipient of Jen’s page. Notice how she designed her card using the general sketch of Jen’s page, as well as the same soft colors. Fabulous!

JenniferMcGuire From Cards to Scrapbook Layouts

Jennifer McGuire designed this playful page. Aren’t the googly eyes on those monsters so much fun?

TeriAnderson From Cards to Scrapbook Layouts

Believe it or not, Teri Anderson was able to create a lovely sympathy card based on Jennifer’s layout—yes, a sympathy card, even with googly-eyed monsters as her starting point. Notice how Teri used a similar paper strip with brads on her card as Jennifer used on the layout. And she even managed to position her flowers in a stacked trio, just as Jennifer did with the three amigos on her page.

And the fun didn’t stop on our end. In the July/August 2010 issue of Paper Crafts, you’ll find how our Dream Team members were inspired by cards of Go-To Gals to create layouts. Visit the Paper Crafts Connection blog for a look at the layout Laura Vegas made from this darling card created by Rae Barthel.

  1. Linda says:

As far as spreading my time between layouts and cardmaking, I’m an equal opportunist–with a little bit of home decor thrown in just for fun (especially around birthdays or holidays). I tend to favor a shabby-chic, collage style, but am also comfortable taking it lean and clean, so the “fireworks” and “little monster” layouts were both appealing to me.

  2. Christy Strickler says:

I don’t tend to make cards. Scrapbooking is definately my forte.

  3. {vicki} says:

I am definately a scrapper first—but thanks to some great cardmaking in the magazine I have become a cardmaker too.

  4. charlene says:

Fun challenges! I am a bit of both–cardmaker/scrapper. I love cards for practical purposes and also b/c layouts take me forever. So, for instant gratification, cards are the way to go for me. But I love the pages that capture memories and use photos of my fam as unique art too.

  5. Cath says:

I’m a cardmaker, but I look at scrappers’ pages for inspiration. This is a great idea you have going here, because a scrapbook page encourages a much more complex design with lots of details. I look for those details for inspiration. I particularly like what Teri did with the sympathy card. Love the details, and I like the cheerfulness of the sympathy card, always a tricky mood to convey with graciousness.

  6. I’m both–I am more a cardmaker….but I do enjoy scrapbooking. I also look at both of these mags and take ideas for all my projects! I love looking through CK for LOs that I can change into cards! That is SOOOOOOOOOO much fun! So thanks for the challenge;)

  7. Sheri K says:

I’m mostly a cardmaker, I’ve tried to scrap but never seem to get it done–too many ideas. I have made a yearly scrapped calendar, my DD helps me and it’s a great porject to work on together. I do subscribe to CK and Paper crafts and get inspiration for both of them. I look at my card making as a way to show my love for family/friends, use my creativity but it’s a small project with a deadline–so I get the card done, have fun making it and send it out the door!

  8. Sarah Jay says:

I do both, but I’m far more drawn to the temporary medium provided by cards. While content and desigs in my scrapbooks need to stand the test of time, my cards are a perfect place to play and experiment.

  9. I love this challenge! I just shared a post on my blog last night along the same lines as this challenge, so I will definitely be entering. :0) I created a card from a scrapbook layout that I had previously made.

I would certainly consider myself a scrapbooker first and foremost, but I love to create cards as well…especially to use up leftover scraps.

Looking forward to sharing my creations!

  10. Love this idea! Always so creative!

  11. julie m says:

i am primarily a cardmaker. since our extended family is quite large i keep saying i am going to stop making cards so i can do something else. but then i think of all the times that the recipients have thanked me for the personalized cards and told me how much they enjoy them. so i take my inspiration from their appreciation of what i do.

  12. Betty-Ann says:

I’m a scrapbooker first and dabble in the card-making too. I really like doing 3D paper crafting, little boxes and packages really get me going!

  13. Candace B. says:

I’m a scrapper first but everyone loves getting a handmade card..and I’m working on developing those skills. This crossing over is so terrific!

  14. Linda Beeson says:

This is one of my most favorite topics, finding inspiration in lots of places. I think I have to decide that I am a cardmaker first, maybe cause they are faster then layouts!!!

  15. Michele K says:

I’m a scrapbooker turned card maker, but still scrappin. I love the idea of a home made created card! I’ve received one and it was so appreciated because of the time spent making the card.

  16. Denise Bryant says:

I’m a card maker! Love to use print papers and all the fabulous embellishments that cross over to all the paper arts. Some of my favorites are ribbons, buttons, sequins, flowers, fibers. So many to choose from! :)

  17. teresa kline says:

fabulous cards and what a wonderful challenge!

    enjoy *~*

  18. Leslie says:

i am a card maker first, then scrapper. =) I wish more people could appreciate the charm of a homemade card from the heart…

  19. Francine says:

I’m both a scrapper and cardmaker. I love doing both, but for different reasons. I love scrapping because I get to be creative purely for myself. I don’t have to please anyone. As long as I like it, then it’s great. With cards, I create for other’s pleasure. Cards are also a great way to practice new techniques on a smaller scale.

  20. Rona says:

I was a scrapbooker first but starting stamping and making cards shortly after. I feel like I am better at the card making but the scrapbooking is something that is very meaningful and I LOVE it too!! So crazy about both I guess!!!

  21. Candace B. says:

Christina Smith…clearly my hero..just my style!

  22. Chrissie T says:

I can’t wait to do this challenge!!! Thanks for always keeping me inspired!!! :)

  23. Linda Iko says:

i recently have been making more cards than scrapbooking but i love them both. my dad inspires me because he has been fighting about 3 different types of cancer and has not given up.

  24. Amy says:

I make cards. I have never been interested in making scrapbook pages, I get my insperation from my cards randomly, Somtimes I lay awake at night and think of like 10 different cards I could be making. Simple things give me ideas, It could just be a peice of paper or a ribbon and BAM I get Ideas.

  25. heather garl says:

I definitely divide my interests…my first passion is scrapbooking because I love to save the memories for my daughters. I love to give cards and make the recipient feel special with a personal card. And I love to alter home decor items. I just wish I had more time!

  26. Natalie says:

I’m definitely a scrapbooker, though I am trying to get more into cardmaking. It’s a great way to try out more techniques.

  27. Linda Beeson says:

I posted my layout from Rae Barthels card at the Club CK blog.
