Weekly Warm-Up: Get a Head Start on the Holidays

Today at Creating Keepsakes, we’re hanging our decorations in celebration of Halloween. Sure, we know it’s over a month away, but there’s no time like the present to get a jump start on the holiday fun. You see, today we’re focusing on Halloween in our week-long Holiday Head Start online celebration. With this special event, you get to learn a bunch of happy holiday ideas for many of the major fall and winter events–Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas. Let’s kick off the fun and set the mood with a little spooktacular decorating. We’ll be making this boo-tiful banner.

For this project, you’ll need a few festive cupcake liners, some doilies, a little spray ink, a roll of crepe paper, a needle and thread, and a sewing machine.

Begin by spraying small doilies with spray ink in colors that complement your cupcake liners. The number of doilies you spray depends on how long you want your banner to be, with one doily per banner piece.

When your doilies are dry, assemble your banner pieces. For the larger pieces, layer a single doily in between two large cupcake liners.

Using a sewing machine, stitch two strips in the center of your layered liners. This creates a channel where your needle and thread will ultimately go through. Basically, you’re turning your liners into fun paper beads.

For the small banner piece, fold a small doily in half and wrap a small cupcake liner around it. Sew across the top center of the liner, leaving about 1/8” of space for threading your needle through at the time of assembly.

Your cupcake liners aren’t going to want to lie flat, so you’ll want to take scissors and trim them along every third corrugation.

Once you have your desired number of cupcake liners (ours used five large banner pieces and eight small ones), you can begin stringing your banner together. Start by accordion folding some crepe paper and stringing it into place.

Then add your cupcake liner. From here, alternate between the accordion folded crepe paper and your liners.

Once your banner is complete, drape it up to enjoy!
