Set the Scene for Your Scrapbook Layouts

Cindy Tobey headshot 125 Set the Scene for Your Scrapbook LayoutsHappy Friday everyone! I hope you’ve had a great week and are gearing up for a fun weekend!

I’m here today to talk about my “Set the Scene” article featured in the February 2011 issue of Creating Keepsakes magazine.

When I think about setting the scene for my scrapbook pages I can’t help but remember the hours I spent as a child drawing all sorts of scenes. I can see myself sitting on the living room floor with that big box of crayons busily filling page after page with colorful scenes. I don’t think there was anything that I loved more! Even now, it’s still a favorite – the scenes have just moved from scratch paper to my scrapbook pages.

So why create scenes on your scrapbook pages? First, because it’s a great way to add meaning to the story you are telling about your photos and second, because it’s fun!

Creating your own scene may seem difficult, but is actually just a few supplies and easy techniques away. In my article you will find scenes created using paper scraps, punches, stickers, transparencies, chipboard shapes and much more! Your scene doesn’t need to be complicated either. It can be as simple as adding two large elements to your page as I did for my layout, “Taking Flight.”

Taking Flight by Cindy Tobey. Supplies Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper; Patterned paper: BasicGrey, BoBunny Press, Hambly Screen Prints, Jenni Bowlin Studio, Little Yellow Bicycle, Pink Paislee and Prima; Brads: Queen & Co.; Chipboard: BasicGrey; Stickers: Little Yellow Bicycle and October Afternoon; Paint: Making Memories; Pen: Sakura; Font: Print Bold; Adhesive: Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L and Tombow; Other: Button, patterned paper and thread.

I created my own sun and wing designs, but to make the process go more quickly, you could use premade products or a die cutting machine.

Kathie Link did a wonderful job of creating a scene with shapes that she cut from patterned paper. And she shows us how easily you can integrate a photo into your scene. Kathie simply cut-out the subject from her photo before adding him to her page. She also added a string to the boy’s hand that connects to the balloon accent. Both are simple techniques that make Kathie’s subject look like he is right there in the beautiful outdoor scene that she created!

That Look by Kathie Link. Supplies Cardstock, patterned paper and die cuts: We R Memory Keepers; Pen: American Crafts; Adhesive: Plaid Enterprises and X-Press It; Other: Embroidery floss and stickers.

Kathie’s page inspired me to create my own page that integrates my focal photo into my page scene.  It took a bit of photo editing first though.

Butterfly Kite by Cindy Tobey. Supplies:  Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper; Patterned paper: BasicGrey, BoBunny Press, Colorbok, Cosmo Cricket, KI Memories and My Mind’s Eye; Stickers: American Crafts and Studio Calico; Ribbon: American Crafts; Buttons: Fancy Pants Designs; Die Cutting Machine: Silhouette America; Scissors: Martha Stewart Crafts; Pen: American Crafts; Font: Walkway; Adhesive: Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L; Other: embroidery floss, photo corner, string and thread.

My original photo shows the butterfly kite, but since I wanted to instead make it look like my daughter is flying the kite embellishment, I needed to get rid of the kite in my photo.

I simply cropped in tight on my daughter and then used the cloning tool in Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0 to get rid of the kite string.

After adding the edited photo to my page I simply pierced a hole above and below my daughter’s hand to thread the string through. Now it looks like she is flying the kite embellishment, connecting her to the scene on my page.

I really like the kite page! We have a lot of kite flying pictures, but not a lot of good ones.
