Weekly Warm-Up: Scrapbook Nautical Color Schemes

In the Tips and Tricks Summer Fun & Travel special issue, I wrote an article called “The Colors of Summer”. It talks about using color to enhance your summer, vacation, and everyday layouts. I love using LOTS of color on my layouts, so I really enjoyed researching this topic and coming up with different takes on the traditional summer color palettes.

One of the three color palettes shown in the article is Nautical. When I think of nautical, I usually think of the standard red, white and blue used on Fourth of July layouts. But nautical has many more meanings and can be used in many different ways to enhance your summer photos.

In my Celebrate Life layout, I used a typical nautical color theme to showcase pictures of my daughter and her friend walking around Balboa Island just after the Fourth of July. I used three 4×6 photos and brought out the colors of the flags through my use of royal blue, red and stark white.

For this next layout called Friendship Blooms, I used three different 4×6 photos from the same day, that also have some flags in the background. But this time I went with a very non-traditional nautical color scheme including sage, kraft and white. These colors add a completely different feel to the layout, a warmth that led me to journal and focus on the friendship between the girls.

Another nautical color scheme perfect for summer layouts is navy blue, golden yellow and creamy white. Blue and yellow are complementary, high-contrast colors on the color wheel, so I used the yellow as the primary color, with smaller doses of navy and white. Use these colors for pictures taken late in the day that have a golden hue to them.
