Weekly Warm-Up: Try This Scrapbook Layout Formula

Isn’t it fun to come up with new designs for your scrapbooking layouts? I like to find designs that work for me and reuse them. A current favorite design of mine is based on dividing the page into thirds.

"I Love Taking Pictures" scrapbook layout

The Rule of Thirds

1/3 photos + 1/3 title and embellishments + 1/3 white space = well designed layout

Any way you divide it you can make the design work. Try it out on your next project and see how fun it can be to play with thirds.

Want to learn more about scrapbook page design?  One lucky winner will win a spot in the following two classes:

Design Challenges, taught by Elizabeth Dillow with Stacy Julian

"3,037,648" scrapbook layout

Fitting scrapbooking into a busy schedule can be tricky; even more so if you’re feeling a little stale, bored, or generally uninspired! Scrapbooking is about the photos and the words that make up your memories, of course, but if you lose sight of the value of the process, our beloved hobby can feel a little like a chore—and scrapbooking should never feel like a chore. If your creative process is feeling a little anemic or you simply want the accountability of a challenge to reset your creative focus, you need Design Challenges!

Scrapbooking on the Grid, taught by Wendy Smedley

"J & E" scrapbook layout

You don’t have to be a magician to learn a few scrapbooking magic tricks! You don’t have to be a trained graphic designer to use proven principles of design on your scrapbook pages, either. In this class, you’ll discover how to use a grid structure to create beautiful pages for any scrapbooking style. You’ll gain an understanding of how to spot grids (even the ones that seem invisible!) and how to adapt them as a foundation for photos, product, or white space. You’ll never look at a blank piece of cardstock the same way again!

To enter this giveaway, leave a comment on this post telling us if you’ve ever taken an online scrapbook class, and if so, what you learned from it. Whether you’re inside or outside the US, your entry is welcome until Monday, April 16, 2012, at 9:00 am (MDT). Winners will be posted here.

  35. no, but it sounds fun!

  36. Melinda Wilson says:

Yes, I have taken an online class and it was a six month class from BPS about graduation. It was awesome class and I ended up completing it twice since I had two sons that graduated within a couple of years. It taught me how to combine only the highlights of each school years and childhood years. Should I never get back to scrapbooking any additional layouts, they have a very nice album from each year from birth through high school graduation.

  37. Lynda says:

I have taken an online class, and in fact, it was yours’, Wendy – The Organized & Inspired Scrapbooker from BP. I learned SOOO much. My joy & speed of scrapping has improved tremendously. I now know what I have & exactly where it is. I have to admit though that I didn’t reach this point until about a year after I finished the class. I spent too much time scrapping & not enough time purging!

  38. Barbara says:

I haven’t taken an online class but would love to learn more about scrapbooking.

  39. Becky says:

Yes I’ve taken several classes at Big Picture Classes. I just finished ” Finish Line Scrapbooking” and learned a really cool (and a challenge to my normal routine of scrapping) method of making a quick, intuitive 6×6 memory of an event or relationship. I scrapped 45+ photos of a recent vacation and finished my book in 5 hours! Super fun!

  40. Valerie says:

Less than a year ago I took my first online Art Journal-class “In the sun”.
Last month I enjoyed “Journal In Your Pocket” (also an Art Journal-class).
I enjoyed both of them and although there may be a difference between Art Journaling and Scrapbooking, I’m sure I would really enjoy the classes that are offered.
What I learned in those previous classes? Different techniques and having fun being creative!

  41. Kate says:

Yes! I’ve taken online classes before and they are sooo worth it. I’ve learned new techniques, and always come away with loads of ideas and inspiration!!

  42. Linda Johnson says:

Love to learn design such as the scrapbooking on the grid. Looks like a style I would enjoy working with. So I will cross my fingers!!

  43. Yes, I am currently taking the ’28 Days of Sketches’ class with Lisa Day and I am LOVING it! Most of the sketches have been for one page layouts so this class has really taken me out of my comfort zone as I’ve always been a two-page scrapper. I have also learned how to scrap just one photo on a page and have it turn out amazing! I’d like to give a huge shout-out to Lisa Day and Big Picture Classes for offering this wonderful class and would be so thrilled if I could win the two classes in this drawing. They have been on my list of things to do as they look to be just as exciting as the one I am taking now! My fingers are crossed!

  44. Susan Dickinson says:

    I’ve never taken one.

  45. Susan Dickinson says:

I’ve done mostly card making, but need to make some scrapbooks.

  46. sherry says:

I started a class but had to drop out, my computer went down!
Could really use the classes you offer!
