NSD Countdown/Garage: Unexpected Organization Solutions

Greetings, scrapbookers! This week we’re celebrating the week leading up to National Scrapbooking Day 2012 (Saturday, May 5) with the theme “scrapbooking around the house.” Each day we’ll host a variety of activities to get your scrap on, including tips, challenges, and prizes GALORE on both the Creating Keepsakes and Club CK blogs. On Saturday we’ll continue the festivities in both places, and we’ve also teamed up with Big Picture Classes to bring you a FREE 12-hour Creative Crop (sign up to reserve your spot today).

As we scrapbook around the house, today we’re visiting the GARAGE. Let’s see how CK Dream Team member Maggie Holmes approaches it.

As scrapbookers, we usually have a steady flow of products coming in as we purchase them and going out as we use them on our pages. Keeping those supplies organized is a constant challenge.  Thankfully, I LOVE to organize! As I get new scrapbook supplies, I often find that I need to change up certain methods of organizing to fit the products better. The garage is a great place to find effective, unexpected organizational units to help you keep those scrap supplies organized. Here are a handful you can try using.

Garage scrapbook organizing idea #1: A tackle box.

Try using a fishing tackle box like this to store smaller embellishments. I love how these open up to show you everything you have and then close up just as easily, tucking it all away in a flash.

Garage scrapbook organizing idea #2: A peg board.

These pegboard systems are great hanging storage space, especially to hang tools in your scrapbooking space. Because most products have holes on the tool itself or its packaging, they’ll fit easily on the hooks or pegs.  If you have some open wall space, I would recommend this so you’ll have things out where you can see and grab them easily.

Garage scrapbook organization idea #3: Plastic storage jars.

Often sold to keep track of nails, screws, and other hardware, these plastic boxes with lids are also wonderful for sorting and storing those small embellishments, like sequins, brads, eyelets, buttons, etc.

Garage scrapbook organization idea #4: Plastic storage drawers.

These handy drawer units typically come in different sizes so you can choose the ones that work best for your embellishments. Try storing dimensional embellishments such as chipboard and flowers in them, and sort them by type or color. Adding a label to the front of each little bin would tell you exactly what you have and where it is!

I don’t know about you, but now I am itching to go start organizing! I think I may run to the hardware store first and grab a few of these things. I know I have some areas of my room that could use a little sprucing up and some of these things would be a perfect fit!

I have a unit of plastic storage drawers with 60 drawers in it. I store everything from eyelets to brads to buttons and pins and misc goodies for scrapbooking and altered art. Everything is very easily accessed and kept tidy :) . For me it is the best way to store all of my small stuff.

I bought a couple of the plastic storage drawers at the hardware store to organize my chipboard alphabets. Only problem was, they were blue…did not match my room!!! Tried painting (with paint made for plastic), not good…SOOOO…I took some of my vinyl…cut it to size…wa-la… a perfect match!!!! And perfect storage solution!!!
