Creative Spaces Vol. 2-on the way!

Megan Hoeppner, creative editor

If you could peek inside my craft room right now, you’d likely do one of three things: (1) run, screaming; (2) faint; (3) call the producers of Hoarders and tell them you’ve found their next candidate. Yes, my space is that messy.

I just can’t help myself. When it comes to crafting supplies, I can’t get enough. Please tell me you relate. That I’m not alone in my addiction.

Don't let this shot of my craft room fool you; it's NEVER this clean.

Never fear, friends. Help is on the horizon. You see, I have a great BIG secret to share with you today… Creative Spaces Vol. 2 is coming!

Yes, we at Creating Keepsakes are back with another edition of this hugely popular special issue. Only, being volume two, this issue promises to be twice as nice. Including hundreds of ideas for keeping our scrapbooking supplies organized and under control!

But wait, there’s more good news. The original Creative Spaces is still on sale, so you don’t have to wait until Jan. 8 to get your storage and décor fix.

Here are just a few shots of my scrapbook/stamp/beading/paper crafting space, which we featured in this issue.

This is a shot of my stamp closet and few of my storage bins, as seen in our first issue of Creative Spaces.

Another image pulled straight from the pages of Creative Spaces (the first volume), this shot is of my ribbon-spool storage. The multi-hook towel holder is from IKEA.

I organize my paper in folders by color. How do you sort yours? I'm always looking for new approaches to this hard-to-store product.

Writing the first Creative Spaces got me so inspired that I carved out a second creative area in my home—a place where I do my sewing and play with fabric. This space (a corner of my family room) will be featured in Vol. 2, but I thought I’d give you a sneak peek now.

I adore my antique card catalog, which I picked up at The Barn, an amazing antique store in Castle Rock, CO. At only $200, this was a definite score! And its drawers are perfect for keeping my small fabric pieces organized.

Wanting a seat that fit the look and feel of my space, I decopauged old sewing patterns to a plain IKEA step ladder.

As you can see, it looks nothing like my pink explosion of a scrap room, but that’s the fun of this issue. You’ll check it out and find what inspires you, which may lead to a craft room makeover, even if that plan wasn’t originally on the horizon. Fun!

Another Exclusive Look
Now’s your chance to see how a magazine comes together. We partnered up with our friends at Studio 5, a local lifestyle program, to do a little Creative Spaces Vol. 2 project. Go behind the scenes with us and check out this Studio 5 segment.

More Sneak Peek Info
As if this weren’t enough to get you excited about the fabulous Creative Spaces happiness to come on January 8, the party continues on the Paper Crafts blog. Take a look. I can assure you you’ll leave inspired.

Your Thoughts
Before you go, I have a favor to ask. Would you mind taking a minute to tell me what it is YOU want from a magazine focused on organizing? Is it fresh approaches to storing your stash, hip decorating ideas, easy do-it-yourself projects, or something else entirely? Maybe you just like to ohhh and ahhh over what others have done in their own spaces. Whatever it is, I’d love to hear from you. We’re still putting the finishing touches on this magazine, and your feedback will help make it the best it can be.

Cheers!

I’m always looking for uber-practical ways to store a lot in a small space. I have a craft room that’s also a furniture catch-all for the rest of the house. When we moved, if it didn’t fit elsewhere, it ended up here. That means odd spaces and no open floor-space to speak of. Most of my storage is odd-shaped/sized plastic containers and one of those cheap wooden units with collapsible cloth boxy drawers.

  3. Dawn Walton says:

I’m with you on the horders’ show!! I just did a whole wall in the IKEA expedit shelves and I’ve still got a pile of stuff on my desk and in bags sitting on the floor… as soon as I think I’m getting half organized, something comes up to throw me back before the beginning!! I love looking at the different ideas people have for storage… new, old, inovative, prefab, do-it-yourself, or hire it out… it’s all good and I never know when I’m going to get an idea from someone else. So thanks for doing a second edition! I’ll be getting it soon!

  4. Sheri K says:

I loved the first issue–but I was hoping to have more direction as where to purchase or how to make items shown. I was in the process of moving my craft/office area and wanted to know where to get that huge shelving that would hold 12 x 12 paper pads, etc. It had photos, but no descriptions or direction. Please include that next time.

  5. Melisa V. says:

I would LOVE to see ideas on incorporating your “scrappy place” into a small space or sharing it with a bedroom. I’m limited to my dining room right now have thought about turning half of my daughter’s room (she’s one) into a crafty space for now. Or, something along the lines of storage and organization ideas for people who dont have a dedicated space (for example, I’m in my living room and I use my hutch to store most of my stuff. The rest is in a book shelf. It’s not pretty at all and it’s not very user friendly. THANKS!!

  6. ShellyJ says:

Can’t wait to see the issue! I am on the list of people who just love to oh and awe over all those creative spaces people created! :) If I had to improve on your first issue, I would have loved to see more of of the “insides” of the room… drawers, cuboards, bins, etc… that would be great!

  7. Brenda B says:

I am among the list of craft hoarders….can’t have enough of all that creative goodness and sometimes love the product so much that it’s difficult to actually use. I find myself waiting for the perfect project to use some of those gorgeous items.

I did not see the previous issue, but I would love to see “economical” ways to store items. There are so many gorgeous craft spaces that I drool over but, I don’t want to invest a fortune in organization. I would love to see inexpensive organization ideas that involve recycling or re-using items.

  8. Jenny Rouchka says:

I would love to see an article about mobile organizing. I don’t have the luxury of a dedicated craft room. I am often moving my stuff between the closet/dining room and my bedroom. I’d love some ideas about how to keep things organized and easily moved around.

  9. carrieh says:

I loved the first issue and look over it from time to time just for the love of scrapbooking and organizing–two of my favorite things. I love that you were able to show a fairly good mix of scrap spaces as I think you can adapt little things from each of the spaces to fit your own style. I don’t have a dedicated space, but I do share with the family room, so having some ideas for small-space scrap organization would be nice.

  10. Madelyn says:

I would love to know what others do about the dust. I am lucky enough to have a good sized room for my studio and in addition to all my supplies, I have lots of “things” like childhood toys and my grandmother’s vases. There are no open surfaces. With cutting a lot of paper, there is a huge amount of dust floating around. I love the ideas shown in magazines about storing small items in cupcake tins and such but anything not stored inside a sealed container gets dusty. It would take ages to pick up every little thing and dust every week. How do you cope?

  11. Shanon says:

I love Creative Spaces! I just love to see how other people decorate and set up their rooms. I know my organization style and am pretty satisfied with it, but I am always looking for ways to set things up in a different configuration or how to make it more visually appealing.

  12. Amy K says:

I always love to see how others organize and decorate their spaces. I also enjoy seeing how people repurpose items (household or otherwise) to use in organizing their stash.

  13. Carol M. says:

I do pretty well at the “main” items of craft space. My problem lies in How To Organize the little stuff. I save a lot of trinkets, scraps off packaging, memorabilia, etc. How/Where do I/can I keep these things? This has been a problem for me for years. HELP!!!!

  14. Karen H says:

I really like to see how others set up small/shared spaces. I am using a corner of my bedroom so my space is limited. I too would like to know where people got their storage items and also see more of the behind the drawers photos.

  15. Nikki C says:

I’m always looking for better ways to make it easier to reach my stash and at the moment I have a tiny tiny space and love to see how one can organize smaller spaces love that desk on the cover so inspiring and neat looking show more !!!!

  16. Stephanie DiSabato says:

I’m so excited to see another issue coming out! I love seeing scrapper rooms!

  17. Pendra says:

Beautiful organization is what I am always on the hunt for. I want it to be functional but also look good, I find being in a very inspirational space helps me be more creative! I cannot wait for this 2nd issue to come out as I hear that Melissa Phillips space is shared and I would love to see where she creates her amazing projects! I m so looking forward to seeing all the space’s and get new ideas!

  18. Nina Yang says:

Can’t wait for this issue to come out! I am always looking for easy to follow, creative approaches to store my stash! Especially for punches and ribbons and ink pads! Thanks!

  19. Connie Wolgamott says:

I absolutely loved volume 1… infact, I bought two copies… 1 that I loan out to my friends and family and have to fight to get it back for the next person who wants to borrow it and one for me to keep… which by the way I ended up loaning out the other day to a dear friend…. so I am so, so, so very excited about volume 2!!!!! I can’t wait to get my hands on it… I am an organizational freak! My friends tell me I should start a business, because I have helped so many of them get their supplies in order.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for one of the best magazines I have ever purchased… twice!

  20. Carol Barol says:

I like to see articles about taking what you have on hand, decorating it in some small way, then, re-purpose it to help in organizing items. (Going green).

I also like to see vintage items (in the raw) used in a new way – like turning it upside down or on it’s side, maybe add something to it for a new function.

Thanks for asking us what we want to see and learn about. It’s nice to know you listen!

  21. Shanon says:

P.S. I also like to see decorating options for those of us on a budget and who can’t paint. I think that’s the biggest problem I have is how to bring my mod podge of stuff all together in a way that looks finished and intentional and polished.

  22. Juliana Fernandes says:

I have a an awkward space for my craft room. It’s a former family room with a huge picture window (great natural daylight), limited wall space, fireplace with raised hearth and baseboard heating under the picture window. I’m always looking for attractive pieces that can disguise their contents when necessary but be fully functional when crafting. It’s important to me to be able to have my room double as a spare bedroom if needed. Right now it looks more like the catch-all room for things noone knows what to do with room. Tall order if you ask me! Plus I don’t have endless funds to spend on furniture so having customized items is pretty much out of the question. I love looking at others’ spaces in the hopes that the perfect solution for me will be out there too! Looking forward to Vol.2!

  23. Sandie Gomes says:

I have a dedicated craft room but it is the attic and the walls go down on each side to where it is only about three feet tall on one outside wall and about four + feet on the other. My room is about 24 feel in length and about 12 feet wide. I have pretty much out grouwn this room with scrapbooking stuff! I need lots of ideas when wall space is precious real estate :-) Want a challenge? Come on over!

  24. Debbie Pawlowski says:

I have a scrapbook room that used to be an extra bedroom. But nothing is organized in it. I have a desk, a nice hutch that matches the desk, many shelving units, white plastic drawer units – with clear drawers and a couple of wire racks. My finished scrapbooks are in this room, as I don’t have anywhere else to keep them. I wish there was a way to organize this room with what I have, or with purchasing just a few items. I don’t have hundreds of $ to recreate the room. But as hard as I try, it just doesn’t get organized for me to use. I look forward to your new “Creating Spaces”!! Thanks! Debbie

  25. Aphra Bolyer says:

Mostly, I just like to oooh and aaah over all the pretty spaces, especially those that incorporate easy yet stylish ways to organize products. Looking forward to this issue!

My friend loaned me vol. #2 and I have thouroughly enjoyed it. I have a very small scrapbook room and I’m getting ready to redo it. I think I am going to take half of my closet and put shelves in it and fix it so I can remove the door. (Make it cute.) I found many ideas I plan to use on my reoganizing project. (Maybe the pallets on the wall.) I’m going to start looking for one. Thanks for so much info. I love just looking through the book. I’m thinking of buying my own copy. Thanks!!!
