National Scrapbooking Day Challenge: Create a Custom Background

Stacy Croninger - Digital Managing Editor

Hi everyone!

Are you having fun scrapping today? Ready for another challenge? This one involves creating a custom background for a scrapbook layout. Here’s a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

  • Randomly spritz spray inks on cardstock
  • Place a template or stencil over your paper and spritz with spray ink
  • Stamp a design on cardstock
  • Use an object, such as a doily or other household item, as a stencil
  • Brush watercolors or paint across cardstock

Here’s an example from the November/December 2012 issue where Suzy Plantamura layered doilies over cardstock and colored around the doily’s details with markers to create a one-of-a-kind background.

I created a fish background stencil with my Cricut machine with the green paper. I sprayed navy ink over the green paper onto the white paper creating the fish background. I trimmed the white paper to 11 1/2 x 11 1/2 and adhered it on top of the stencil cut green paper. I then used the fish as accent pieces after I dry embossed them with my wood grain embossing folder and then inked them.

Thanks for the great challenge. LOVED IT!
